Terra Sigillata is a project derived from one of Cathryn Dwyre’s drawings from A Curious Cabinet and developed for the Collapse: Climate, Cities & Culture exhibition at the Gallatin Labowitz Gallery at New York University in 2018.
The term “terra sigillata” has multiple historical associations. In the related projects A Curious Cabinet and Terra Sigillata it becomes a lens to view the inextricable yet ambiguous relationship between humans and the Earth.
An ambiguous object-environment and microcosm of life for a world no longer hospitable to the habits and rituals of the past, an altered world in which previously held categories have been scrambled, giving way to new forms of purposeful instability, Terra Sigillata dehabituates conventional disciplinary identities - between art, architecture and landscape - as well as forms of habitation that enable us to see things anew.
